Scout Camp Activities in North Devon

If you're planning a scout camp in North Devon, you're already in one of the best places in the UK for outdoor adventure! From incredible beaches to secluded coves, it's the perfect setting for a week of camping, activities and unforgettable fun!

When you have such incredible access to the water, why not make the most of it and book your troop in for some watersports too?

At Active Escape, we have years of experience running a range of watersport activities for scouting groups. We can tailor our activities to you and your troop, making them a great addition to any camp programme. Whether you want something high adrenaline or something that gets the whole group working together, we have activities to suit all groups.

Coasteering - Swim, Scramble and Jump

Coasteering is one of the most exciting adventure activities for scout groups visiting North Devon. Instead of exploring the coast from the footpath above, you'll be at sea level; swimming through gullies, scrambling around the rocks and jumping into deep water.

Our coasteer routes naturally build as we go: starting with easier sections and smaller jumps before building up to bigger challenges for those who want them. One of the best things about coasteering is we can take it at our own pace. We usually have a couple of size options at each jump and none of them are compulsory, so people can just watch if they are still building their confidence.

By the end of the session, you will have explored an area of the coast hidden from the coast path above and with a few memories and stories from the day!

For scout groups looking for adventure activities, coasteering is often the highlight of the week!

Learning to Paddleboard on the North Devon Coast

Stand Up Paddleboarding is a great way for scouts to learn something new on the water.

Our Paddleboard Skills sessions focus on learning the fundamentals of paddleboarding in a fun and supportive environment. After getting kitted up, we start with the basics: how to stand up, balance, control the board, and paddle effectively. Once everyone is comfortable, we build on those skills with a few challenges and games to help scouts develop their balance, coordination and confidence on the board. We also teach board rescues as part of these sessions. Scouts find it a fun way of getting each other onto the board while also teaching them lifesaving skills.

It's a great introduction to paddleboarding and works well for troops with mixed experience levels. Some scouts might be stepping onto a paddleboard for the first time, while others might already be developing turns, balance and control. By the end of the session, groups are paddling confidently and potentially ready to explore a little further afield.

Party SUP - The PERFECT Activity for Scout Groups

While Coasteering and Paddleboarding are very popular activities, a Party SUP session are the perfect fit for scout groups. These sessions blend the two together, giving you the adrenaline of coasteering with the fun, games and skills of paddleboarding.

Our Party SUPs are giant 8-10 man Stand Up Paddleboards. Instead of paddling individually, you'll be working together to move the boards across the water. It quickly becomes a team challenge. Everyone needs to coordinate their paddling, balance together, and communicate to keep the board moving in the right direction! The first few minutes are usually quite chaotic - when one person wobbles, everyone follows suit and often ends up swimming! But once the group gets the hang of it, we're off and exploring secluded beaches.

These sessions involve some games and challenges: turning the boards into a giant slip 'n' slide into the sea; a gladiators' style last man standing with pugil sticks; and many more! We also incorporate some coasteering into these sessions as well to give a full, rounded session of games and personal challenge.

Party SUP is the perfect activity because:

  • everyone takes part together but also at their own pace
  • it encourages teamwork and communication
  • it works for mixed skill levels and confidences
  • it guarantees plenty of laughs along the way!

For leaders looking for a fun group activity while visiting Devon this summer, the Party SUP is one that will leave your troop talking for the rest of the week!
